Personnel at Joint Base Andrews Hospitalized After Suspicious Package Incident

Several individuals were hospitalized Thursday after a suspicious package was opened at Joint Base Andrews, a U.S. military installation in Maryland.

According to a statement from the base, first responders evacuated the facility and surrounding buildings after a suspicious box was opened inside one of the offices.

“A cordon was established around the area, and the building and connecting building were evacuated as a precaution,” the statement read. “First responders from Joint Base Andrews were sent to the location, found no imminent dangers, and turned it over to the Office of Special Investigations. There is an ongoing inquiry.”

The package reportedly contained an unidentified white substance, according to two individuals familiar with the investigation. Several personnel were transported to the Malcolm Grow Medical Clinics and Surgery Center on the base after coming into contact with the package.

HAZMAT Testing and Ongoing Investigation

Initial field testing by the HAZMAT team detected no hazardous materials, though officials have emphasized that further testing and analysis are ongoing. The HAZMAT team left the scene later Thursday evening after securing the area.

At this time, authorities have not confirmed the cause or severity of the reported illnesses among those who handled the package.

The Air National Guard Readiness Center, where the box was opened, remains closed as investigators continue their work. Officials are also reviewing political materials that were reportedly included in the package.

Background and Context

Joint Base Andrews, located just outside Washington, D.C., is home to several key military units and often serves as a transport hub for senior U.S. government officials, including the president, vice president, and cabinet members.

President Donald Trump had visited the base one day prior to the incident, though officials have not linked his visit to the package event.

The Air National Guard Readiness Center plays a critical role in coordinating communication between the National Guard Bureau and Air National Guard units across all U.S. states and territories.
